What the redirect checker does

A redirect sends a visitor from one address to another. They are normal and useful, but they go wrong more often than people expect. The redirect checker follows your address one step at a time, the way a browser or a search engine does, and lists every stop: the address, the status code and how long that step took. It then tells you whether the chain ends on a working page and whether anything along the way should change.

What you see in the result

  • Each hop in order, with its status code, such as 301 for moved for good or 302 for moved for now
  • The time each step added before the page started to load
  • The final address and whether it loads without an error
  • Plain advice on chains, loops, temporary redirects and the move from http to https

Why it matters for a local business

Redirects pile up after a new site, a new domain or a switch to https. Old links, ads and profile listings may still point at the first address, and each extra step slows the visit and can dilute what search engines pass along. A chain of three or four hops, or a loop that never ends, can quietly cost you calls. Seeing the whole path makes the fix obvious.

How to get the most from it

You need: a page address. Time: about ten seconds.

  1. Check the version people actually type, such as the plain domain without www and without https.
  2. Check your Google profile website link, since that one brings real visitors.
  3. Aim for one hop at most, and use a permanent redirect when a page has moved for good.

What it does not do

It follows up to ten hops and stops at pages that are not public. It reports what the server says, not what any one browser cache remembers.

Questions

What is the difference between 301 and 302?

A 301 says a page moved for good, a 302 says for now. For a permanent move, use 301.

How many redirects are too many?

One is fine. Two or more is worth fixing, because every hop adds waiting time.

Why does my address end on a different page?

A rule on your site or host is sending visitors there. The hop list shows which step did it.

Is the redirect checker free?

Yes. You get 3 free checks a day with no sign-up. A repeat of the same check within a day is not counted.

What do you do with my details?

We use them only to run the check and send what you asked for. No list selling, and you can unsubscribe any time.
