What the local rank checker does
The local rank checker shows where your business appears in the map results for a search such as “emergency plumber”. Instead of one number from one spot, it samples a five by five grid of points around your business, because the map results change from street to street. You see a grid of positions, a plain summary of where you show and where you do not, and the competitors who appear above you.
What you see in the result
- A 5 by 5 grid of positions, one for each point around your business
- The share of points where you appear in the top three map results
- Which competitors show above you, and where
- A short summary in plain words of your strong and weak areas
Why it matters for a local business
Customers find you from where they are standing, not from your office. A business can lead the map for its own street and be missing two miles away, where half of its customers live. A single ranking number hides that. The grid shows which neighbourhoods you win, which you lose, and which competitor to study first for each one.
How to get the most from it
You need: your business, a search term and a city. Time: about two minutes.
- Use the words a customer would type, such as “water heater repair”, not your company’s own phrasing.
- Run it for your two or three main services, since each has its own map.
- Start with the nearest weak area. That is where a small change can move you fastest.
What it does not do
Map results change through the day and between searchers, so treat each run as a snapshot. Positions are never fixed and nobody can promise you a place in them.

Why a grid and not one rank?
Local results depend on where the searcher is. A grid shows how that changes across your service area.
Why are some points empty?
No result may have matched at that point, or the check could not read it. The summary says which.
Can you move me up the map?
We can improve the things that influence it, such as your profile, reviews and pages, though we cannot promise a position.
Is the local rank checker free?
Yes. You see your result without signing up. If you want the full report by email, you can ask for it.
