How to Check Whether Your Business Shows on Google Maps

Local SEO · Updated October 28, 2026

When a customer nearby searches "plumber" or "junk removal", Google shows a map with three businesses at the top. Most of the calls go to those three. This guide shows you how to see where you really appear, without paying for anything.

Why your own search lies to you

If you search for your own business on your own phone, Google knows where you are and what you clicked before. You will probably see yourself near the top. A customer three miles away sees something different. So the first rule is to look the way a customer looks.

Check it in five steps

  1. Open a private or incognito window so your search history does not change the result.
  2. Search for what a customer would type, such as "water heater repair" or "junk removal near me". Use the service, not your business name.
  3. Look at the map results, not the website results. Note whether you appear in the top three, further down, or not at all.
  4. Repeat from a second place: a friend's phone in another neighbourhood, or a different part of town. Maps results change from street to street.
  5. Write down the search, the place and what you saw. A simple table is enough.

Example: you search "drain cleaning" from your shop and appear second. A neighbour searches from across town and you do not appear. That tells you your listing is strong near your address and weak further out.

Read what you found

  • In the top three nearby, missing further out: your listing is fine. Your service area, categories and reviews decide how far it reaches.
  • Missing everywhere: check that your Google Business Profile is verified, the main category matches your main service and your phone number and address match your website.
  • Appearing, but with few reviews next to the others: reviews and recent activity usually explain the gap. Asking every customer, the same way, helps over time.

What actually moves the result

Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance. You can improve relevance (an accurate main category, services listed, a page on your website for each service) and prominence (reviews, a complete profile, a clear website). Nobody can promise a position, and anyone who does is guessing.

A quick way to repeat this every month

Checking by hand from a few places is slow. Our free local rank checker shows a grid around your business so you can see the whole picture at once. Run it monthly and keep the results, so you can see whether your changes help.
