What is title tag?

The page title shown in browser tabs and as the blue headline of a search result.

The plain definition

The title tag is the title of a page that you write in its code. It shows in the browser tab and is usually the large headline of your result in search. It is one of the strongest signals of what a page is about, and the first thing a searcher reads.

An example

A strong title for a service page is “Water Heater Repair in Springfield | Acme Plumbing”. A weak one is “Home”, or a long list of keywords that gets cut off. Each page should have its own title that matches what the page really covers.

Why it matters for a local business

Put the main service and the place near the start, add your business name at the end and keep it short enough to avoid being cut off, which is roughly 60 characters. Write it for people first. A clear title helps both where you appear and whether anyone clicks.
