What is long-tail keyword?

A longer, more specific search phrase. It is searched less often but usually shows clearer intent.

The plain definition

A long-tail keyword is a longer, more specific phrase, such as “tankless water heater installation in Springfield” instead of just “water heater”. Fewer people search for each one, but the person who does usually knows what they want, which makes the visit more likely to lead to a call.

An example

A broad page about “plumbing” competes with every plumber and every article on the web. A page about “slab leak repair in Springfield” competes with far fewer and speaks directly to someone with an urgent, specific problem.

Why it matters for a local business

Small local businesses often do better by covering specific services and places well than by chasing the broad terms. Give each important service its own page, name the area you serve and answer the real questions customers ask before they call.
