What is Google Search Console?

A free Google tool that shows how your site appears in search, which searches bring visits and what problems exist.

The plain definition

Google Search Console is a free tool from Google for the owner of a website. It shows which searches your pages appeared for, how many people clicked, which pages are listed, and whether Google found problems such as errors or pages it cannot read. You prove you own the site to get access.

An example

You open the performance report and find that a page about “emergency drain cleaning” gets many views but few clicks. That points to a weak title or description. Another report shows that a new page is not yet in Google’s index, so you can ask for it to be checked.

Why it matters for a local business

It is the most direct source of information about how Google sees your site, and it costs nothing. A monthly look is enough for most small businesses: check for new errors, see which searches bring people and fix the pages that get views without clicks.
